The Late 2013 iMac 27: A Powerful and Efficient All-in-One Desktop

Apple's late 2013 iMac lineup introduced several significant upgrades, particularly in the 27-inch model. One notable change is the inclusion of a faster hard drive, with a 7200 rpm drive replacing the slower 5400 rpm drive found in the 21.5-inch model. Additionally, the Iris Pro 5200 GPU offers improved performance compared to its predecessor, the GeForce GT 640M.

The Iris Pro graphics processor is notable for its integration of 128 MB of eDRAM memory into the CPU. This allows both the CPU and GPU to access this high-speed memory, reducing slowdowns caused by accessing system memory. Furthermore, the GPU does not rely solely on system memory to drive the display in the entry-level 21.5-inch iMac.

Another significant upgrade is the shift from Ivy Bridge CPUs to Haswell CPUs. This change should result in reduced power consumption and heat buildup compared to previous models. The improved graphics capabilities are also worth noting, with all but the entry-level 21.5-inch model featuring nVidia GeForce 700M-series graphics processors. The exception is the Iris Pro 5200 graphics found in the entry-level 27-inch iMac.

The CPU speeds on the 21.5-inch models remain the same as in previous years' iMacs, but the 27-inch model sees a boost to 3.2 and 3.4 GHz. Overall, the late 2013 iMac 27 offers improved performance, efficiency, and graphics capabilities compared to its predecessors.
